Chapter Fourteen

“We ran into your father’s goons on the way back.” As Octavia filled me in, she unfastened Bacon and lowered him to the ground. Hooves scampering over the floor, he bolted out of the room and towards the kitchen in search of snacks. “I made a compelling case and they let us pass.”

I didn’t want to ask, but felt I had to. “What was that?”

Octavia shrugged off her black leather jacket and dropped it on the foot of the bed beside Tormund’s unconscious form. “Exact words? I said we’re on the same side, dickface. Then I blasted him with an emerald jolt which I absolutely did not intend to do, but it proved to be an effective strategy. The combination did the trick, and they let us by.”

Leave it to that pink-haired beauty to earn a huff of laughter from me despite the mountains of horrendous shit I had trudged through in Tormund’s mind. “You seriously called him dickface?”

“Followed by a little shock therapy, yes.”

My sweat-dampened hair slapped against my forehead as I shook my head. “Those who have resided in the fae courts their entire lives only understand painfully literal speech. Truth be told, he was probably more stunned trying to decipher why you thought his face looked like a phallic symbol than the jolt you gave him.”

Octavia leaned one hip against her black wolf’s side and nonchalantly scratched behind his ears. “Not the first guy I left confused and trembling. Won’t be the last. So…” She nodded towards the sleeping vampire. “What have you dug out of his head? Anything useful?”

I chewed on the inside of my cheek, instantly regretting it when a protruding fang stabbed into the tender tissue of my mouth. But my hesitance was for good reason. What I had learned so far painted a picture of pity owed to the same man who had killed me and held Octavia hostage. That information would not be well received by Octavia. Seeing as her abilities had been on the fritz lately, I decided to avoid electrocution by playing my cards close to my chest. “No, nothing yet.”

Lifting one brow, her lips screwed to the side. “How about mediocre? Or at least slightly less dire? Anything along those lines?”

I forced a tight smile I hoped she wouldn’t see right through. “Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answer to.”

Slapping both hands to the front of her legs, Octavia pushed off the unwavering side of her canine sentry, who looked anything but menacing with his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth. “I hate to sound like a broken record, but answers are key if we want to avoid a full-fledged war with your people. Because Dotty does not have your sister’s best interests at heart, and your dad fully intends to blame us for that. If the circumstances were right, I fully believe we could sway Nora to our side. But she won’t take the risk unless she’s sure shit will turn in her favor.
